Singing
this line from “America the Beautiful”
is not at all “hatred of country” but the height of authentic patriotism. “America,
America God mend thine every flaw.”
If
I had my way, which obviously I don’t, I would suggest “America the Beautiful” as a far superior national anthem both
musically and in content. I don’t think the references to God are any more
problematic than “under God” in the Pledge, and even at that only minor editing
could pass constitutional muster.
I
even think “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”
would be an improvement, though some of the historical allusions are
problematic.
